An interactive installation in which visitors walk through a semantic cloud of 66 words, each connected in a five-dimensional network, inspired by Deleuze & Guattari's Mille Plateaux.
For the final exam project of my BA at the Rietveld Academy, I developed an interactive installation in which the visitor could step into my conceptual realm of that time. The installation presented a fluid network of the 66 words or concepts which I had worked with throughout the final two years of the education.
When walking towards a specific word, that word would come forward and attract related words in the network. All the words in the network were categorized along 5 axes, in a multi-dimensional network, inspired by Gilles Deleuze & Félix Guattari’s work in Mille Plateaux (1980).
By walking in and out of the cloud the visitor could select specific terms, and create their own semantic relation between them. This visitor’s own concept realm could then be explored further.
The five axes in which I placed each word in the cloud were:
- Reach: Local to Global
- Applicability: Specific to General
- Subjectiveness: Opinion to Fact
- Health: Safe to Hazardous
- Antiqueness: Historic to Futuristic
On the outside wall of the installation I pasted an enormous blow-up of the network and showed eight posters explaining the process of the work and multiple views onto the multi-dimensional semantic cloud.
